Sammy Hagar on Father Time:
"When I first wrote Father Time, I kept it from everyone because it was so personal that I’d get too choked up to actually sing it. I wrote it just after turning 70 while I was at our then home in Maui. That house was my sanctuary in the middle of the jungle, overlooking the ocean-- it was just paradise. The words ‘Father Time’s over there looking over my shoulder’ just kept going through my head, so I picked up my guitar and the rest of the song just came spilling out. I turned on my iPhone and recorded it. I cried my eyes out after I wrote and played it back. It’s probably the most personal song that I’ve ever written and now, after just turning 75, I’m finally ready to release it." – Sammy
. . .
Hard right to the head
Left hook to the body
Ain't nobody gone down but
They sure taking a beating
And the songs we sing won't change it
No matter how loud we play it
I can see it
I just don't know what to do about it
Father Time Lyrics
[Verse 1]
Father time's over there
Looking over my shoulder
I'm here soaking up the sun
And thinking I ain't gettin' no younger
Crashing waves clawing at the shore
That's been going on forever and more
There's somethin' 'bout the sun in Mexico that burns different
[Chorus 1]
And this island smells familiar
Don't remember what I can't forget
Still living this dream and it ain't over yet
Ain't over yet
[Verse 2]
Married young
Worked hard to raise four children
Played every bar in every small town that would have me
Finally met a record man who signed me
Said he liked the way my star was shinin'
Hit the road
Man, that ain't no place to start a family
[Chorus 2]
But that highway looks familiar
Don't remember what I can't confess
Still living this dream and it ain't over yet
When was the last time
We did somethin' for the first time, baby?
Been a long, long time
Uh-huh
Uh-huh
[Bridge]
Oh, it's been a long, long time, baby
Oh, been a long, long time
Uh-huh, yeah, yeah
[Verse 3]
Hard right to the head
Left hook to the body
Ain't nobody gone down but
They sure taking a beating
And the songs we sing won't change it
No matter how loud we play it
I can see it
I just don't know what to do about it
[Chorus 3]
Yeah, and history looks familiar
Don't remember but we can't forget
Still living this dream and it ain't over yet
Still living this dream and it ain't over yet
[Outro]
It ain't over yet
And father time's over there
Looking over my shoulder
