Currently in the French Hortense’s memoirs, the author tells of her jealous husband Louis. The more I go over this story the more I feel bad for Louis. I’ve been trying to prove for years that Napoleon and Hortense were dyadic. Louis was not well mentally and he really couldn’t handle being overshadowed by Napoleon AND Hortense - who were perhaps not so secretly crazy about each other. He was never really capable of supporting either of them. Putting Louis in charge of Holland was a massive error but I think Napoleon wanted Hortense to be a Queen but she hated being away from him.
