This is one of the Montholon letters written around 1819-1821 between St. Helena and Europe. The writer of this letter, Countess Albine de Montholon was the reputed last mistress of Napoleon and I’m building a case that she was also behind his murder.
This letter mentions Napoleon’s famously beautiful sister Pauline. She was a character known for affairs, pettiness, poor health and a genuine love for her brother, Napoleon. She was said by Napoleon to be a real “Roman”.
XXXII. - From the COUNTESS TO THE COUNT OF MONTHOLON
Paris, August 31, 1820.
I received, my friend, the answer I expected from Princess Pauline; she finds in my request all the necessary authenticity, and she would have taken it upon herself, she writes me, to write to the English government, if Madame and M. le Cardinal had not pointed out to her that these steps perhaps would thwart the wishes of the Emperor, who had made them warn that, when he needed someone, he would send them a direct request. 1. On January 7, 1820, W. Holmes sent to Napoleon about 70 volumes, very well chosen; see my thesis on the Origins of the Napoleonic legend, chap. III.
2. I could not specify who this author was, the reading of the name seems moreover uncertain.

What prevented me from proposing this directly to Planat is that I have no doubt that he would not accept but that I fear, from what I am told of his health, that he could not be useful at Longwood.
I am assured that when he has worked one hour, he is tired and sick, that he can no longer bear it.
You see that it would have been a long time ago that someone could have been sent if you had official orders to do so. I will do my best to get from Lord Bathurst what you want. I no longer suffer from liver problems.
