This part of a series of letters by Josephine and Hortense to Eugene. Hortense was last in misery over finding out she was going to be sent away to Holland to become a queen.
The Beauharnais vs. the Bonapartes was the chief domestic struggle around Napoleon during his marriage to Josephine. To simplify it, Napoleon’s family were jealous of the preference that Napoleon showed to Josephine and her children. Another interesting dynamic is that of Napoleon and Eugene. I offer these original documents so people can draw their own conclusions.
Dear Eugene,
Paris, March 16, 1806.
I take every opportunity to write to you, my dear Eugène, but I very seldom receive from you your news. I’m not going to give you a hard time because I know you are really busy.
Do not go around getting sick the month of May, I’m going to put all my happiness into that time. (1) The Emperor said to mom a few days ago, "Sometimes I scold your Eugene, but tell him that I still love him.”
Farewell, I kiss you as I love you.
HORTENSE.
(1) Eugene was to visit in May.
