Hortense sounds surprised at the depth of her love for Napoleon.

This is part of a series of letters sent to Eugène de Beauharnais from his sister Hortense. Eugene and Hortense were Napoleon’s adult stepchildren.

When we last left off, Hortense was in despair about being sent to occupy the throne of Holland - where she would be much more under her husband Louis’s control. Louis was Napoleon’s brother.

I prefer examining letters as they seem even more revelatory of our story’s true personalities than even congruent memoirs. Hortense writes of her surprising amount of love for the stepfather, Napoleon, who entered her life when she was around 13. Some accounts claim that Napoleon would’ve divorced her mother Josephine (as a consequence of infidelity) had Hortense not reminded Napoleon that he had promised her his fatherly protection.

Dear Eugene,
From Saint-Leu, 18 June 1806.

I said goodbye yesterday, my dear Eugène. It is a very sad moment; but I'm trying to dull my pain by thinking about how I'll come back to Paris as soon as you do.
I know they are preparing the Pavillon de Flore for you. So it shouldn’t be long. The festivities are definitely set for August; so I'm sure to see you soon and spend some time with you. I really need to think that I will have happiness in a month to bear the present sorrow.

The Emperor was very good to me, but he may not know how attached I am to him, for it seemed to me that I was leaving my own father when I left him.
He allows me to write to him often; he always talks about you with pleasure.
So, my dear Eugène, don't be sad. Love your wife very tenderly; it is much better if she is not with child until after your trip to France.
I leave tomorrow. I am leaving France; I still feel that I will always be French. What a destiny is ours! No matter, let us fulfill it with courage, and let our attachment console us for all this greatness.

HORTENSE.

Let’s look at Hortense’s planetary transits on the day this letter was written. Dark and transformative Pluto is transiting Hortense’s 6th house of daily work. She essentially works for Napoleon and her daily tasks are undergoing transformation in a way that’s hurting her.
The Sun (fame) transits her midheaven area of reputation as she ascends a throne. The feminine, emotional Moon is transiting the constellation it rules, Cancer. Chiron (wounds) transits Hortense’s natal stellium of Jupiter (foreign affairs), Mars (abuse) and Pluto (death/rebirth). I’m only pointing out a few things but Hortense’s pain can be seen here.
