Who was Countess Albine de Montholon? Qui était la comtesse Albine de Montholon?

In an attempt to finally find out what really happened in the Napoleon saga, I’ve been looking for the congruent story.

There are rumors that Count de Montholon played a role in the murder of Napoleon and that his wife Albine had been sleeping with Napoleon and that they had a child together.

Let’s look into this. Will Albine’s memoirs corroborate other memoirs that have been featured in this project?

Below, Albine says Hortense was a lovable and welcoming hostess on behalf of Napoleon when they were all at Malmaison.

The translation of this excerpt about Napoleon and Hortense reflects what Hortense wrote in her memoirs.

From Albine’s memoirs:

- Arriving at Malmaison, I found it full of people. However, I was given a room. My son slept on the carriage cushions, which he made into a bed.
At lunch, I was sitting across from poor General Labédoyère. His noble and pale face, his wrinkled forehead, his preoccupied air, finally all his physiognomy marked with sadness seemed, that day, to predict his fatal destiny.
Queen Hortense was as always loving, gracious and welcoming. She was continuously going to the Emperor's apartment to see if he needed anything, and in a moment when she had just seen him, she said to the few people who were troubled about him around her: “I don't understand the Emperor; instead of taking a stand, instead of deciding something about his departure, he reads a novel.”

I was struck by this appearance of carelessness and selflessness in such an important circumstance. Since then, I have been able to judge that when his mind was strained by some inconvenience, it was the means he used for his morale, like a physical bath, to calm and relax his nerves.
The Queen was impatient that he listened to nothing and did not lend himself to any discussion relating to his departure and the imminence of the danger which threatened him, if he prolonged his stay at Malmaison.
We were constantly told that the Cossacks surrounded us, that the bridge was down, finally that the castle could be invaded and the Emperor removed, which was true.
The Queen rightly wanted him to leave Malmaison: She had left her children in Paris and also wanted to join them, and nothing was decided, and the Emperor read his novel!
This apparent carelessness did not prevent him from taking care of the personal interests of those of his officers who were lost while losing him.
Generals and officers came to ask him to secure their position. None of them were refused, however little he could do to shelter them. We know that it was not until the last moment that the Emperor, or rather those around him, thought of what would be taken -

Here is a page about the two women who followed Napoleon to St. Helena: Albine de Montholon and Fanny Bertrand.
