This letter is written a few days after the battle of Leipzig (the Battle of the Nations) which took place between 16 and 19 October 1813. Napoleon and his army were then withdrawing from Germany. He arrived in Mainz on November 2nd and then in Saint-Cloud on November 9th.

Il sera agréable à l’Empereur de recevoir par elle l’assurance des bonnes dispositions et de la tranquillité des habitants de la Toscane. Je suis bien aise d’apprendre le bon état de votre santé et celle du Prince et de la princesse votre fille.
Je vous remercie de la sollicitude que vous témoignez pour la mienne ; elle est fort bonne. Mon fils est très bien portant (Napoléon II, né le 20 mars 1811). L’arrivée de l’Empereur à Mayence vous est sans doute connue. Les dernières nouvelles m’apprennent qu’il continue à jouir de la meilleure santé.
